Comparing Amish and North American Society Essay examples -- Compariso
Comparing Amish and North American Society We can compare Amish society as seen in the movie Witness to North American society to decide which is more ideal. An ideal society is one where there is a strong sense of community among all the members. Education prepares children for life; therefore the type of education a child receives will change the society in the next generation. Although education is valued in both societies, its focus is much different. The Laws of a society reflect the values of a community, and it shows what they consider to be right and wrong. Each society has laws that reflect its values; however the way the laws are expressed is much different. Family life in a society is important, because families bring the community together. Though children are valued in both the societies, family life is different between the two when comparing the roles of the husband and the wife. The Amish lifestyle is more ideal because there is a better sense of community within the society. Education in both societies is recognized as important. We see this in both societies because of the mandatory education laws. However, the focus of the education in each society is different. In North American society the focus of education is quite broad; to graduate highschool a person must have language, physical education, science, english and arts credits. Also, it is mandatory to attend school until grade 10. In Amish society however, school is only required up to grade 8. The...

Free Essay - Evil in Nathaniel Hawthornes The Scarlet Letter :: Scarlet Letter essays
Evil in the Scarlet Letter One belief that people live by is that evil is the nature of mankind, yet there are others that feel man has good intentions but those intentions can be overrun by the devil. Nathaniel Hawthorne points out that the former is true of all people in the novel The Scarlet Letter. In this novel, there are three main characters who commit evil and sinful acts, but each act is at a different degree of sinfulness (i.e. the sins get worse as the story goes a-long). These three sinners, in the eyes of the Puritan community, are the beautiful Hester Prynne, the esteemed Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale, and the cold-hearted doctor, Roger Chillingworth. Like Hawthorne, I believe that evil is the nature of man but that there are different magnitudes of evil; some choose to fight it, like Hester, and some choose to give in, like Chillingworth. Hester Prynne, a strong willed and brave woman, in respect to the two additional people, has committed the least amount of sin in the novel. In the eyes of the Puritan community, though, she has committed one of the worst possible sins that can be imagined: adultery. They feel she is horrendously corrupt, yet it is not truly her fault. Hester is the victim of her husband, Roger Chillingworth's (formerly Roger Prynne) stupidity by sending her to New England by herself, while he remained in Europe. Chillingworth even admitted that it was his fault when he voiced, "It was my folly! I have said it. But, up to that epoch of my life, I have lived in vain."(Ch.4, p. 68) Hester is also a victim of fate. She has no way of knowing if Chillingworth is dead or alive when the Indians capture him after he arrived in North America. She still goes against the strict Puritan rules, and breaks Commandment 7, which was often punished by death. Arthur Dimmesdale is a strong pillar of the community and a very devoted Puritan. What could he do that is worse than young Hester Prynne's appalling act of adultery? Well he goes a little further into the same sin. First of all, he commits adultery with the abandoned Hester. Then instead of admitting his sin to the public, he keeps his dark secret in his heart, knowing it will eat at him for the rest of his life until he reveals it.
Close-Read of Life of Pi
The Power of Faith What power does Faith have? People who believe in a religion see faith as a powerful tool that can be used to solve life problems. In the novel Life of Pi, by Yann Martel, the protagonist Piscine M. Patel, or P', is a member of multiple belief systems. He has a strong faith in God, which helps him in the most troubling of times. Pi sees faith as very important and is possibly a key reason he was able to survive his ordeal. The importance of faith to Pi is clearly shown in the first part of the book Life of Pl. Bapu Gandhi said, ââ¬ËAll religions are true. I Just want to love God. â⬠(Martel 69). Pi is fascinated by multiple religions, and sees them all as a way to become closer with God. He sees the similarities between each religion and puts his beliefs and prayers into one higher entity. Pi has learned that faith is equal to love and he chooses to show his love for God by accepting multiple religions. ââ¬Å"It is not atheists who get stuck in my craw, bu t agnosticsâ⬠¦ To choose to doubt as a philosophy of life is akin to choosing immobility as a means of transportationâ⬠(28).Pi holds faith on a higher tandard and views people who do not have faith in something to be close-minded or unimaginative. His beliefs that faith is all we need conflicts with others who do not have the courage to believe in faith. Pi even mentions how he can imagine what an atheist would say on his deathbed, but an agnostic, ââ¬Å"to the very end, [would] lack imagination and miss the better story' (64). Pi doesn't understand how someone can survive on doubt when there are many things to put their faith into. But his faith will be tested with the horrible event that awaits him.Pi's strong beliefs and faith in God help him to survive his terrible experience on the lifeboat. ââ¬Å"l will not die. I refuse itâ⬠¦ Now I will turn miracle into routineâ⬠¦ Yes, so long as God is with me, I will not die. Amen. â⬠(148). Pi turns to a system an d to faith to help him through the new life he must face. He creates a schedule for himself, planning ââ¬Å"general inspectionâ⬠¦ fishingâ⬠¦ [and] prayersâ⬠(190) to bring balance and order back to his life. Pi prays and has faith in God to help him survive, his faith pushing him to think wisely about his situations. grew weary of my situationâ⬠¦ But life would not leave meâ⬠¦ It was natural that, bereft and desperate as I was, in the throes of unremitting suffering, I should turn to Godâ⬠(284). Even in his weakest moments, he still has faith in God, still believing that God will give him the strength to carry on each day. He prays to all his gods in times of trouble. ââ¬Å"Jesus, Mary, Muhammad and Vishnu! ââ¬Ë I saw a sight that will stay with me for the rest of my daysâ⬠(150). Pi's faith in God never ended, even when he felt he could not go on any longer.A voice in his head, his faith in his survival, kept pushing him to hold on. Or was it re ally his faith? Pi's faith may not be main reason he made it through his adventure. ââ¬Å"It is life's only true opponent. Only fear can defeat lifeâ⬠(161). Pi's is suddenly thrust into a strange and terrifying situation, and to live he must fight off the fear that attempts to engulf him. He must push away the fear to think rationally and being able to make it out alive. Pi's fght for survival and the internal struggle he youâ⬠¦ Richard Parker, thank you.Thank you or saving my lifeâ⬠(286). Richard Parker could be the reason Pi survived. Richard Parker was there for Pi, to show Pi how other dangers paled compared to Richard Parkers presence, to keep Pi busy and distracted from the terrible life they have to live, and to provide Pi with some form of company. Without those things, Pi would have most certainly given up on life. Pi's strong belief in faith and his own faith in God may have been the reason for his survival. His faith kept him strong through his whole horr ific ordeal, keeping him from giving up on life. There are many other possible reasons he would have survived if it had not been faith in the first place. Faith is a powerful object, giving strength to some in times of need and weakening others when their power is too great. But one fact is evident. Everyone needs faith in something, whether it's a religious form, a theory, or a value. Without faith, people would not be able to see the point of living life and giving all you have to it.

Rape Shield Laws Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Rape Shield Laws - Research Paper Example Center of discussion in this paper are rape shield laws, court rules or statutes which limit the defendantââ¬â¢s counsel ability to introduce the sexual history, past conduct or reputation of the accuser or victim as evidence during a trial relating to rape. Therefore, rape shield laws can prevent the victim from being discredited by the irrelevant information to the defendantââ¬â¢s innocence or guilt. In the United States, each state and the District of Columbia has a rape shield law applying to criminal cases and a few to civil cases. Rape shield laws apply to both state and federal criminal and civil cases except the certain limited circumstances, such as when the accuserââ¬â¢s consent can be illustrated or when the accused and the accuser have a shared history. Also, the defense may be required to prove that such evidenceââ¬â¢s exclusion would amount to violation of constitutional rights of the defendants. Most of these laws were adopted in a bid to combat the practic e where the victims are discredited through introduction of irrelevant information concerning their reputation, sexual history or chastity. Most of these laws were adopted in the 1970s; the first rape shield law was passed in the state of Michigan in 1974 and since then all states have enacted one. Even though these laws were popular in the US, they were criticized for violating the rights of the defendant to confront the accuser as enshrined in the Sixth Amendment. It has also been criticized for being overly arduous for the defense, as well as violating civil liberties like the freedom of speech. (Flowe et al, 2007). So, what do rape shield laws do? Commonly, rape shield laws bar the introduction of reputation and opinion regarding the sexual history of the accuser. Additionally, they prove that evidence about victimââ¬â¢s specific sexual conduct is supposedly irrelevant unless such evidence is direct source of disease, pregnancy, or injury that may be an issue in the case, or has relation to particular sexual conduct with the defendant (The National Centre for Victims of Crime, 2011). Rape shield laws in eleven states have an exception which is known a ââ¬Å"catch-allâ⬠which allows the judge to permit the introduction of evidence of any nature, even those that are normally barred by rape shield laws, if it is necessary to introduce that evidence in order to protect the accused constitutional rights. Various rape shield laws allow the judge to decide if the evidence in question is relevant or not. If it is relevant, the judge determines whether the evidenceââ¬â¢s potential prejudicial impact outweighs its relevance, or not. Rape shield laws are relevant in the criminal justice system as they guard against the introduction of irrelevant evidence of the innocence or guilt of the defendant, but which can potentially prejudice the jury against the accuser or the victim (The National Centre for Victims of Crime, 2011). Flowe et al (2007) explain that rape shield laws are important to the victims as they help in ensuring that the rape victims are treated with respect, dignity, and fairness during criminal trial by making sure that the victim is not subject to a public airing about his or her past conduct, sexual reputation, and any other information which might be irrelevant. More importantly, rape shield laws increase the possibility that victims will report rape cases as they will be more likely to come forward to report. If the sexual history of the victims would have been examined or revealed in court as part of rape trial, it is very likely that victims will not report the rape cases with increasing regularity. However, it should be noted that rape shield laws only guard against the introduction of evidence or irrelevant information during trial, but do not protect the victims from publicity prior to the trial. This may probably deter many victims from reporting rape cases. Rape shield laws have been credited for the decrea sing

In the field of law, Wendel says that he has done more than enough to ensure that lawyers operate within the specified rules and regulations of the field. This is from the verify that as a lawyer, I need guiding principles on all aspects that concern my job. This is both on a social and certified angle. It would automatically not be probable with the weight of my job to act without regulations and rules. My job necessitates acting within the lines of suitability and what is not satisfactory. Additionally, my job is also bound by forms of injustices and justices t hat can only be cleared with the application and proper appliance of laws, so as to take steps in agreement to the lawââ¬â¢s prospects. Customer is always right Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 4000 words
Customer is always right - Essay Example Business pressure has increased over the years, "and there was no alternative for the boss but to start letting go of some of his workload and his requirement to do all of the thinking".1 Furthermore, the owner of company had to purchase technologies to stay ahead . As the result, staying ahead forced him to concentrate on sales and customer service, and the information regarding technologies he employs partially lost its importance in the boss's minds. But the modern customers are becoming quite inquisitive and frequently need thorough information about the product, so many companies are running 'clarifying policy' to explain to customer the main technologies used. Company executives arrange presentations and press conferences to introduce a new product or a new strategy of the organization. The rapidly-growing Craters & Freighters franchisees view customers as the key to their success. "In the three years since they took over the Dallas Craters & Freighters franchise, Tony Alleman, Choyet Terro and Don Theriot were named Rookies of the Year and recognized for having the fewest claims and largest sector growth within their franchise's system. This year, Alleman, Terro and Theriot, ages 39, 40 and 38, respectively, continue their winning streak. They were singled out for the 2003 All Star Award, based primarily on how well franchisees run a business".3 The main priority of their business is dealing with customers - this, probably is a secret of their growth. The franchisees work in several directions to show to a customer that he receives the best service. "When a customer calls for a quote, our policy is to get back to that customer within 20, 25 minutes," Theriot says, "Our response time, our attention to detail, making sure the paperwork is correct ... the employees understand all this needs to be done."4 Based on their different work expirience, each partner manages a certain part of the business--Alleman handles production, Terro oversees finance and Theriot is responsible for sales, so it allows them to share the responsibility. Those perspectives are useful in crafting work policies, including those relating to customer service. Theriot says that they get together and discuss the major decisions in order to run an honest discussion and to make a decision, which is suitable for everyone.Yet not a single company can work without any problems. If something goes wrong, the franchisees ensure customers' concerns are addressed, via a low-tech solution. The customer always deals with a living person, not with a voice mail, as it makes him sure that his complaint will be examined carefully. Each problem is addressed immediately; as a result the customer sees feedback and attention to his opinion - whatever it is.Customers have taken notice of these initiatives. The
